PGDM - Agri-Business and Management Programme

The two-year, fully residential, AICTE approved FABS PGDM – Agri Business and Management is the flagship programme of Sagar Group of Institutions (SGI) . The uniquely designed curriculum and pedagogy of the programme orients students to agro ecology concerns;inculcatesbusiness skills and spirit of entrepreneurship, management competencies; and provides opportunities for experiential learning of food, agri and allied business enterprise management dynamics. The programme offers streams of optional courses providing opportunities for intense and focused learning of choice. The programme helps the students to evolve as competent food, agri business and management professionals and champions.

  • Interactive learning – FABS PGDM AMB course is designed to bea hands-on approach to help students become more engaged in dialogue and co-learning with other students and faculty. Emphasis islaid onlifelong learningthat reflects UNESCO’s four pillars of learning which are learning to know, to do, to live and to be. With or without a form of technology, interactive learning helps students strengthen problem solving and critical thinking.
  • 66 weeks of interactive learning terms – each of 12 weeks duration with courses for 36 credits each – 198 credits (40 core courses – 180 credits plus optional courses-18 credits)
  • Experiential learning – The program has been designed to a have a strong emphasis exposure to live projects, industry visits and interaction, internships etc to enable learning through exposure, experience and reflection.
  • 24 weeks of experiential learning modules – 102 Creditsinclude Induction (6 weeks – 24 credits); Internship (12 weeks – 48 credits) and Project Work (6 weeks 30 credits)
  • PGDM-ABM program duration – 94 weeks including vacation-4 weeks

The new restructured curriculum and pedagogy mix of PGDM course at FABS is unique and not merely ‘a conveyor or product of a particular body of knowledge but, a dynamic process of actual learning, acquisition and inquiry of the unknown through teacher-learner joint exposure to, exploration of, in-situ experiencing, interaction and cooperation through cases, games, simulation of contextual realities both literally and virtually.

The curriculum and courses are crafted carefully to equip a student through interactive and experiential learning with domain know-how, business skills, management: foundations, functions and integration, and entrepreneur spirit through core and optional courses; intense learning options and guided project work.

Overview of Experiential Learning Module

Induction into PGDM-ABM programme is very comprehensive and planned over 6 weeks’ duration. Orientation to Sagar Group of Institutions (SGI), Food and Agri-Business School (FABS) is planned during the first few days which include verification of documents for eligibility, medical check-up and fitness clearing. PGDM-ABM programme overview is presented and shared.  Exploring Food and Agri Business forms the core of this induction programme.

Agribusiness is a complex system consisting of four major sub-components – input supply, agricultural production, processing & value addition and marketing and distribution. These components are very much influenced by various internal and external factors and central to “the farmer/ producers”, who are considered to be primary stakeholders in agribusiness process. The agribusiness firms participating any of the agribusiness system components need to understand socio-cultural & economic background of farming communities and rural settings for effective decision-making. Therefore, agribusiness professionals/ managers need to be exposed about the rural realities, agricultural production system, local resources, and constraints faced by the farmers related to their income and livelihoods. Post production handling, processing and marketing arrangements for different sub-sectors needs to be explored. During these visits, they are given assignments to document various aspects of local institutions, local governance, socio-economic condition of farmers, business opportunities, agricultural practices, surplus generation, technology adoption, diversification, allied/ supplementary activities, non-farm activities, rural infrastructure, crediting etc. The assignment themes are notified in advance and requisition of preference will be invited from the students. To increase the geographical coverage of each assignment, not more than four-six students of a particular theme are allowed to participate in a group.

Exposure visits forms part of the pedagogy.

Preparation for the PGDM-ABM programme includes clearing of Refresher Courses.

Experiential Learning Module 2

The Management Internship course is a managerial field experience program in an organization under joint supervision of the instructor and a member of the host organization. The intent of this is to provide for an opportunity to gain experience in an applied setting as a complement to the course work offered in the PGDM-ABM programme. It provides an opportunity for a student to reflect on how your academic coursework is “fleshed out” in the “real world” and to develop professionally. An internship in management will gear the student up for a professional life and make him/her a valuable asset to any team. To be a successful management intern, a student, needs to learn the ins and outs of daily business operations and identify areas for improvement in any food, agri and allied business enterprises or institutions. Problem-solving and analytical thinking become the individual’s companions in any of the functional management areas or integrated management areas as he/she works to incorporate client feedback and quantitative research into creative solutions. The students work will also develop their capacity for interdepartmental communication and collaboration. Best of all, the skills the student learns in management internships are highly transferable to new industries, and future employers will recognize the candidate’s potential to take on leadership roles.

Students have to work on a Project close to the job they are aspiring for or an enterprise they are going to set up at the end of PGDM-ABM programme for intensely focused and independent learning either individually or in in small groups.
